Usually, whenever a crisis breaks in your area, Facebook will send you a notification asking if you are safe. The crisis can be either natural, like an earthquake or flood. Or, it can be man-made like mass shootings.
If you are safe, you can notify your friends that you are safe. Facebook will also share a post on your timeline highlighting you are safe. You can also manually mark yourself as Safe if you didn’t get the notification from Facebook.
How to Mark Yourself as Safe on Facebook App
Facebook uses various criteria for deciding who gets the crisis notification. But nothing is perfect. Sometimes, you may get a notification when you are not in the crisis-affected area. If this is the case, then select Doesn’t Apply to Me.
If you’re in an affected area and receive a notification from Facebook asking if you’re safe, tap Tell friends that you’re safe.
Sometimes you may not get the notification even when you are in a crisis-affected area. In such situations, you can manually mark yourself safe and let your friends and family know that you are sound and well. Follow the below guide to mark yourself safe on the Facebook app.
Step 1: Open the Facebook app on your device.
Step 2: Tap the search bar located at the top of the screen.
Step 3: Search for “Crisis Response”.
Step 4: Tap the result displayed which is Crisis Response.
Step 5: Select the crisis that is affecting your area.
Step 6: Select I’M SAFE.
If you’re using a mobile browser or a PC, open the Crisis Response page through this link. Select the crisis and mark yourself as safe.
Once you mark yourself as safe, Facebook will notify your friends about it and also share a post that you’re safe.
How to Ask If Someone Is Safe On Facebook During a Disaster
Follow the below steps on the Facebook app to ask a person whether they are safe. Keep in mind that you can only ask this to people who are on your ‘Friends List’.
Step 1: Open the Facebook app on your device.
Step 2: Search for “Crisis Response” using the search bar.
Step 3: Select the Crisis Response page.
Step 4: Select a relevant crisis page.
Step 5: Tap Check on friends.
If your friends are in the affected area, they will appear here. Tap “Ask if safe” next to their name.
They will now receive a notification to mark themselves as safe. Facebook will notify you about your friend’s safety when they respond to the notification.
